This gallery has the photos used in the 2006 calendar published by the Westford Conservation Trust.

The Westford Conservation Trust was established in 1984 for the purpose of preserving open space and other natural resources. Westford is a beautiful town and is committed to a balance between development and conservation. The calendar was prepared to illustrate some of the results of that commitment.

The Westford Conservation Trust is a not for profit, volunteer organization that is supported solely by private contributions.

Frank Winters > Light Snow on Stony Brook (The December photo in the Westford Conservation Trust's 2006 calendar)

Stony Brook runs through Westford, gracing several of the town’s conservation areas, including East Boston Camps, Acker, and the Stone Arch Bridge conservation lands. The brook is the home of beavers, muskrats, mergansers, herons, and dozens of other varieties of creatures that spend all or part of their year on the brook.

Frank Winters > Westford's Nabnasset Lake just before sunset (we are looking east).

This is a beautiful pond located in the northeastern part of Westford. “This 115-acre pond is located about two and a half miles north of Westford center. Average depth is about 14 feet, and transparency is excellent. A summer survey conducted in 1982 recorded 11 species: largemouth bass, chain pickerel, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, pumpkinseed, bluegill, black crappie, yellow bullhead, brown bullhead, white sucker and golden shiner.” From the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. Photo taken at sunset looking east.

“She sweeps with many-colored Brooms And leaves the shreds behind.
Oh Housewife in the Evening West - Come back, and dust the Pond!”

Frank Winters > Tadmuck Brook rages through the Cider Mill conservation land. (June's photo) Cider Mill conservation land consists of 39 acres, the site of a mill operated by Dan Sheehan at the turn of the century (circa1900). This is a beautiful woodland covered mainly by white pines. This coveted realm of skunk cabbage and rocks, of mystery and beauty is just a few steps from busy Lowell Road.

“And this our life, exempt from public haunt, finds tongues in trees, books in running brooks, Sermons in stones, and good in everything.”

William Shakespeare (From “As You Like It”)
Frank Winters > Stone Arch Bridge

This bridge, built in about 1872, was a railroad bridge. It is a keystone arch, spanning more than 60 feet over Stony Brook -- no mortar was used in construction. The surrounding conservation land includes The Russell Bird Sanctuary, a rail trail over the bridge and Blue Bird Hill. This conservation land is a fine place for meditation and peaceful reflection.

“Centuries-old bridge, the hope of outstretched hands. Rainbow spanning an abyss. Arcane supporting arch, Keystone. ... Keystone -- cross of fortune. ... Keystone -- bridge of love.”

Frank Winters > A chipmunk, one of the many that make westford their home. This fellow is wondering what to do next. A supplementary photo used for the month of August.
Frank Winters > Tadmuck Brook as it wanders through the Cider Mill conservation land. A detail that caught the photographer's eye. A suplementary photo on the July page of the calendar.
